Abstract:

A comparative analysis of cow dung from indigenous Punganur cattle and crossbred cows revealed that dung from Punganur cattle contains significantly higher levels of essential nutrients such as organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium. This enhanced nutrient profile underscores the superior quality of manure produced by Punganur cattle, affirming their value in organic and natural farming systems. To promote sustainable agricultural practices, the Livestock Research Station (LRS), Palamaner, has actively supported farmers by distributing a total of 2,65,095 kg of cow dung to 239 farmers and 19,899 kg of cow urine to 290 farmers between 2015-16 to 2024-25. These are the main ingredients in preparing Jeevamrutham and Ghanajeevamrutham, played a vital role in natural farming system and all the farmers experienced the advantages of natural farming through improved soil fertility, crop production and ecological balance. These efforts emphasize the pivotal role of indigenous breeds like the Punganur in fostering eco-friendly, low-input farming methods.
