Importance of cereal consumption in diabetes management: A comparative study

Abstract:

Type 2 diabetes requires effective dietary management to control blood sugar levels and avoid health problems. Diet is very important in managing the disease, in diabetes mellites, cereals particularly whole grains and refined grains play a vital role. This review focuses on a comparative analysis of whole grains with refined cereals and their influence on diabetes management, with a focus on the nutritional differences, bio-active components, glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, and Weight management. Whole grains are rich in fiber content, vitamins, and minerals have low glycemic index enhance insulin sensitivity, and reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. In contrast, refined cereals lost the vital nutrients during processing which leads to rapid spikes in blood glucose levels and worsens diabetic conditions. This review highlights the importance of including whole grains in the diet for better glycemic control and overall health of individuals with diabetes and their role in diabetes management by examining existing studies.
