Abstract:

The present study examines the length-weight relationship (LWR) and growth patterns of Johnius belangerii from the Karanja jetty, west coast of India. A total of 201 samples, comprising 95 males and 106 females, were collected from March 2023 to October 2023. The analysis showed a pooled allometric coefficient (b) of 2.84, indicating negative allometric growth for the species, where fish become heavier at a slower rate as they increase in size. Females exhibited positive allometric growth (b = 3.12), suggesting they become more robust and heavier with maturity, while males showed negative allometric growth (b = 2.67). The coefficient of determination (r²) were found to be 0.85, 0.82, and 0.92 for females, males, and pooled, respectively, suggesting a good correlation between length and weight. The condition factor (K = 1.01) suggests the fish are generally healthy and adequately nourished in their environment. This study highlights the growth pattern and overall condition of J. belangerii in that particular environment. Continuous monitoring and support are required for management efforts and sustainable fisheries.
