The present study was conducted to know the status of small ruminant (goat) marketing, availability of market facilities, and the marketing channels involved in the Kalyana Karnataka (KK) region of Karnataka, India. An ex-post facto research was conducted in Bidar and Kalaburagi districts, where three livestock markets from each district were selected, resulting in a total sample of six markets. Primary data were collected using semi-structured questionnaires administered to market functionaries, traders, and farmers. The data was tabulated and analyzed by using simple statistics. Results revealed that approximately 30 functional goat markets exist in the KK region, with the highest concentration in Kalaburagi district, followed by Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari, and Yadgir. Most markets operate weekly and are predominantly managed by local trusts, while a smaller proportion is regulated by APMCs. The Farmer-Trader-Farmer channel emerged as the most common goat marketing channels. Market infrastructure assessment indicated inadequate provision of loading/unloading platforms, animal sheds, veterinary aid, and banking facilities, although basic facilities such as canteens, drinking water, and parking facilities were available in many markets. The study highlights the need for strengthening infrastructure and streamlining marketing systems to enhance efficiency and welfare of stakeholders in the small ruminant value chain.
