Abstract:

The wild boar's pectoral limb is essential for digging, support, and weight bearing. The current study was conducted at the Department of Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary College Hassan, Karnataka. The bones from the pectoral limbs of Indian wild boar were procured during post-mortem examination and used for the present study. The scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, and sesamoids make up the wild boar's pectoral limb bones. The scapula is the largest and widest among all and it is well-developed for the attachment of the synsarcosis and shoulder muscles. The humerus is a long and massive bone in the arm that has well-developed tuberosities and resembles a twisted, italicized version of the letter "f." The radius and ulna form bones of forearm with a narrow interosseous space. The caudal surface of radius and medial surface of ulna are concave for lodgement of the extensor muscles of carpus and digits. Carpals are arranged in proximal and distal row with radial, intermediate, ulnar and accessory carpal in proximal row, accessory carpal is being narrow and pointed towards palmar surface assist in forming carpal and distal row consist of first, second, third and fourth carpal. The distal surface of distal row carpals bears articular surface for metacarpals. The wild boar consists of two chief and two accessory digits with two paired proximal and two unpaired distal sesamoids. The current study identified the osteological characteristics of the wild boar's pectoral girdle bones. By connecting morphological traits to behaviour and habitat utilization, this research may support larger ecological and conservation initiatives as well as aid in the anatomical and evolutionary studies of suids.
