Abstract:

The study examines the economic impact of Tendu patta collection in the Nagpur district of Vidarbha Region, highlighting its role as a supplementary income source for rural communities. Tendu patta, harvested from the Tendu tree, is integral to the local economy, particularly during the lean agricultural season. The study aims to analyze the income generated from agriculture and Tendu patta collection, estimate the share of income derived from Tendu patta, and identify the constraints faced by collectors. The research involved a survey of 120 Tendu patta pluckers from selected villages in Saoner and Kalmeshwar tehsils. Data were collected through personal interviews using a pretested schedule, focusing on costs, returns, and operational challenges. The analysis employed standard cost concepts to assess the economic aspects of cotton and gram cultivation, comparing the costs and returns with those from Tendu patta collection. The results indicate that the net returns per hectare are Rs. 48,941.39 for cotton and Rs. 29,166.88 for gram. The average income of Tendu patta collectors with land is Rs. 1,18,683.48 while landless collectors earn Rs. 60,161.91. For Tendu pattta pluckers with land, agriculture remains the primary income source, contributing 65.81percent of total earnings, while Tendu patta collection accounts for 17.49 percent. Landless pluckers rely more on Tendu patta collection (36.33 percent) and agricultural labour (39.95 percent). The study also identified several constraints, including threats from wildlife, walk long distance, snake bites, irregular payments, monopolistic purchasing practices, and low prices. The findings underscore the importance of Tendu patta collection in supplementing rural incomes, especially for those with limited agricultural resources. Addressing the identified challenges could improve the financial stability and overall well-being of Tendu patta pluckers.
