Abstract:
Sericulture, the ancient practice of cultivating silkworms for silk production, has a rich and storied history spanning thousands of years. This traditional industry, long associated with cultural heritage and luxury, has shown remarkable adaptability in the face of 21st-century demands. Technological advancements, such as genetic modifications in silkworms and the mechanization of silk reeling, have significantly improved the efficiency and quality of silk production. Simultaneously, shifts in consumer preferences towards sustainable and ethically produced textiles have prompted the sericulture industry to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as organic farming and waste recycling. This article delves into the current global trends shaping the sericulture industry, focusing on the intersection of technology, sustainability, and market dynamics. It explores how technological innovations are driving the industry forward, enabling it to meet the demands of modern consumers and compete in a globalized market. The article also highlights the growing importance of sustainability in sericulture, examining how practices such as organic silk production and circular economy principles are being integrated into the industry, these positive developments, sericulture faces significant challenges that could impact its future prospects. Climate change poses a substantial threat to mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, as these processes are highly sensitive to environmental conditions. Additionally, the industry faces stiff competition from synthetic fibers, which offer similar qualities at a lower cost, potentially eroding silk's market share. Labor shortages in traditional sericulture regions further complicate the industry's outlook, requiring innovative solutions to attract and retain skilled workers, this article provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of sericulture and its future prospects. It offers recommendations for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers to ensure the continued relevance and growth of sericulture in the global economy. By embracing innovation, fostering collaboration, and prioritizing sustainability, the sericulture industry can thrive in the 21st century and beyond.
