Socio - economic status of Dardi community maintaining Gurezi cattle in Gurez valley of Kashmir, India

Abstract:
The present study was conducted in Gurez and Tulail tehsils of district Bandipora of union territory of Jammu and Kahmir with objective to ascertain socio-economic characteristics of farmers who are rearing Gurezi cattle. A well-structured questionnaire was developed for collection of data and the data was analyzed using statistical methods. The survey findings indicate that the majority of the respondents (71.42%) belonged to large-sized families, while 22.86% had medium-sized families with 6-8 members, and the remaining 5.72% were from small-sized families. In terms of age distribution, a significant portion of respondents (72.38%) fell within the middle age group of 31-55 years, followed by the young age group up to 30 years (16.67%) and the old age group above 55 years (10.95%). The study also revealed that the joint family system was more prevalent (57.61%) among the respondents compared to the nuclear family system (42.38%).
