Abstract:

Bio ecology of pod fly, Melanagromyza obtusa (Malloch) was studied on pigeonpea var. AGT 2 under laboratory conditions during the period from December 2022 to January 2023 at Agricultural Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Derol, Dist. Panchmahals, Gujarat. The total life cycle of male and female fly from egg to emergence of adult under laboratory condition on pigeonpea ranged from 24 to 34 days and 27.5 to 36 days, respectively with an average of 30.38±2.88 and 32.73±2.54 days, respectively. The mean incubation period of egg was 2.78±0.39 days. Eggs were measured 0.40±0.10, 0.10±0.02 mm in length and width, respectively. The maggot of M. obtusa passed through three instars. The total maggot period lasted for 9.22±1.20 days and the average pre-pupal period and pupal period was about 0.85±0.24 days and 11.83±1.11 days, respectively. The average length and breadth were 2.18±0.19 mm and 0.79±0.06 mm for third instar maggots, 1.56±0.15 mm and 0.66±0.05 mm for pre-pupae, and 2.36±0.21mm and 0.99±0.09 mm mm for pupae. Adult longevity was 8.0±1.0 days in case of males where as 7.10±0.88 days in case of females. Average length and breadth of adult male fly 1.79±0.24 mm, 0.64±0.06 mm however, female fly was 2.00±0.25 mm, 0.70±0.08 mm in diameter. The fecundity of female was observed from 15 to 32 eggs with an average of 26.00±4.92 eggs.
