Growth potential and instability analysis of pulse production in India

The present study aims at analysing the growth potential and instability of major pulse (gram, pigeonpea and lentil) over a twenty years time period from 2002-03 to 2021-22 across the India. The growth and potential of pulse are estimated based on secondary data of EXIM, area, production and productivity has been obtained from Directorate of Economics and Development and Agricultural Statistics at a Glance, 2023, India for twenty years by using of statistical tools like growth model and Cuddy-Della Valle index. The compound growth rate has been found 2.59, 2.02 and-0.11 percent for area under gram, pigeonpea and lentil respectively. In case of production, the annual compound growth is estimated i.e. 4.94, 3.54 and 2.20 percent respectively while in case of productivity, i.e. 2.30, 1.49 and 2.30 percent respectively. The compound growth rate area, production and productivity of pulse have been analyzed 1.77, 4.11 and 2.30 percent and variation has 11.77, 25.41 and 14.35 percent respectively, it indicate the good potential and higher profit of pulse production in India. The continuously increasing the domestic as well as global demand of pulse has good opportunities for earning of domestic as well as foreign exchange.
