Abstract:

Semecarpus anacardium L., commonly known as the marking nut tree, is a significant wild edible fruit indigenous to Central India, renowned for its extensive use in traditional medicine. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the nutritional composition, phytochemical constituents, and pharmacological properties of Semecarpus anacardium, emphasizing its potential health benefits and applications in modern pharmacology and nutrition. The nutritional profile of Semecarpus anacardium edible thalamus and kernel reveals it to be a rich source of carbohydrates, proteins, healthy fats, and essential vitamins and minerals, particularly Vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients contribute to the fruit's potential as a supplementary food source in nutrient-deficient populations. Phytochemical analysis highlights the presence of various bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and saponins. These compounds are known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and cardioprotective properties. The high phenolic and flavonoid content in particular underpins the fruit's strong antioxidant capabilities, which are crucial in mitigating oxidative stress and inflammation. Traditionally, Semecarpus anacardium has been used to treat skin diseases, digestive disorders, and joint pain. Modern research corroborates these uses, suggesting promising therapeutic potentials. In conclusion, Semecarpus anacardium L. is a nutritionally and pharmacologically valuable wild edible fruit with significant potential for enhancing health and wellness. This comprehensive analysis underscores the importance of further research and development to fully exploit its benefits in both traditional and modern medical practices.
