Fifteen lines were crossed with 4 testers in line x texter mating design to determine the general and specific combining ability for yield and quality characters in Indian mustard. Variance due to lines show highly significant differences for all the characters in both F1 and F2 except protein content in F1’s only. The significant and positive GCA effects for seed yield/plant were exhibited by three lines, RLC 3, IC 597880, DRMRIJ 12-40 in both F1 and F2 and tester Kanti in F2 only. Out of 60 crosses studied, the most promising crosses were, DRMRIJ 12-48 X Kanti, LES 39 X Kanti, TN 3 X Basanti, RE 44 X Rohini, RE 8 X Varuna, in F1 and LES 39 X Basanti, NC 37362 X Varuna, RE11 X Rohini, M 34 X Rohini, DRMRIJ 12-40 X Varuna in F2 showed significant and positive SCA effects for seed yield/plant as well ass other characters.
