Abstract:

A field experiment was conducted during 2023-2024 taking eighteen different Mung bean varieties with the aim to evaluate Mung bean varieties for effective symbiosis with indigenous rhizobium spp. Eighteen distinct Mung bean varieties cultivated in the research field of the Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the College of Agriculture, Indira Gandhi Agricultural University, Raipur (C.G.). This study included the isolation and characterization of mung bean rhizobia isolated from root nodules of various Mung bean genotypes grown in field. Also assessing Mung bean plants for symbiotic performances includes study of nodulation, and analyzing, measuring biomass accumulation and colony morphology in Mung bean plants. The best-performing Mung bean varieties, which demonstrated significant nodulation, high biomass accumulation, and elevated, simultaneously excellent colony growth of concerned Rhizobium isolates, were chosen. The highest root fresh and dry weight was observed in the Mung bean cultivar IGKM-O6-10-7, (3.46 g/plant, 1.91g/plant). The highest average nodule count was observed in the cultivar IGKM 06-27-5, with (64.33/per plant). The highest nodule fresh and dry weight was recorded in the Mung bean cultivar IGKM 06-27- 5, at (0.553 g /plant, 0.142 g/plant). Mung bean rhizobia isolates, along with assessments of nodulation of Mung bean crops, identified the top five promising isolates as MR 5, MR 7, MR 27, MR 21-2 and MR 18-2 Similarly, the most effective Mung bean varieties for effective symbiosis with these indigenous rhizobia were found to be as IGKM,06-27- 5, IGKM-O6-10-7, IGKMO5-O6-27, IGKM-2021-2 and IGKM 05-18—2. Indigenous strains adapted to the local Agro-climatic conditions of Chhattisgarh has proven valuable and holds potential as for improving Mung bean crop productivity.
